Took Apryl to Red Robin at the Temecula Mall. She earned this treat for her good grades and positive attitude the last few weeks.

Had the good fortune of having Jennifer, who is the sister of my friend Jarrod Dulaney, as my server. She was very patient with our vegetarian order, taking great effort to get the order correct.
As tasty as Red Robin can be, often they mess up my order. Of course they always make up for the mistakes they make with a free desert or something; however sometimes, when in a hurry you just want it right the first time.

That is what this article is about, good service. As a business owner the best thing you can do is make sure your customers are satisfied, the first time. In encourage my employees to take time and do the job right so we don't have to do the job twice.

I am sure the line cooks at Red Robin Temecula appreciate Jennifer taking the time to get our order correct, as did I.

Here in the Romoland community in the City of Menifee we need help, sooner than later. This is what Romoland looks like all winter long, flooded. It has been like this for years before we were incorporated into the City of Menifee.
So I ask of you City of Menifee leaders, can you help our local residents in Romoland to end this flooding issue? It drives down land value, leads to blight and certainly won't help stimulate growth and create jobs looking like this. I know that Supervisor Ashley has spend time and resources in HIS part of Romoland, however Supervisor Stone's section of Romoland seems to be the forgotten land, except for the power plant.
Many of the local residents voted for incorporation with the idea that there would be an effort to remove the gangs, tagging, flooding and code enforcement issues - so far the results have been lacking to be honest.

The need for Teen activities in Temecula / Menifee / Murrieta

Below is my entire response to a post on Temecula Patch http://temecula.patch.com/articles/the-year-of-the-teen. I know there is a need for a more comprehensive teen venue in SW RivCo, here are my thoughts:

I agree for the most part, and fully support more activities for teens. I do host an event at The Merc (http://www.liveatthemerc.com) every Friday night and at least 2 of the Fridays are geared toward teens. I have had teens drive from OTHER cities as far away as Yuma Arizona to see events at The Merc and tell me they WISH they had that. Teens also have The Vault as you mentioned. The both venues put together are a lot more than most cities have, including Murrieta, Menifee or Lake Elsinore to the best of my knowledge.

The unfortunate reality is running a teen club is very expensive with very little return on investment, thats why people with money are not lining up to finance such a venue. I know first hand as the guy who started Madlins Coffee House music events in February 2004 and then moved to Java Joz / Cuppy's in January of 2006. Also, 'the city' (in your article) gets a bad rap, however Java Joz / Cuppys was in Murrieta, not Temecula. After Cuppys closed I did shows at the Temecula CRC (in 2007 and 2008) and then for the last 2 years at The Merc; both venues owned by the city of Temecula. In fact Temecula has been one of the most pro-active cities in the area with teens.

What needs to happen for benefit of teens in 2011 in Temecula is an improvement in the economy and a local city putting politics aside and helping a teen venue open. An improved economy might entice the right investor to partner with the right promoters to make a quality, safe venue serving teens a reality. I have plenty of plans and ideas but have yet to find the other right pieces to the puzzle. Who knows, 2011 might really become the year of the teen.

This man is for real, and is now our influential friend in the power circles of Riverside County in which he operates.

I wish him all good luck as he pushes on to becoming Temecula's very own self-made billionaire, but as he fondly honors and defends his beautiful home town.

It has been several years now that Granite Construction's Liberty Quarry application has been working its way through the county of Riverside. I have followed this important issue with interest during this time and have always felt that the open review process was a valid one and that ultimately the real facts would rise to the surface. My decision was to wait for the environmental impact report to be completed before I took a stance.

I have to admit that, when I first heard about the quarry, it sounded like a project that made good sense. Those of us in the development industry are well aware of the need for aggregate and other road-building materials and the fact that they obviously have to come from somewhere. The more I learn, the more I realize that this discussion should be about only where the most appropriate locations are to build a quarry.

It has become very clear to me that the proposed site for Liberty Quarry is not an appropriate location. I have not come to this conclusion lightly. After carefully weighing the information being brought forth, I realize that approval of the project would be a mistake and would seriously undermine this beautiful community that we have all fought so hard to preserve.

A great deal of my success over the years can be attributed to the fact that this region is a wonderful place for people to live. Just look at what we have that will be jeopardized by this huge mining operation. Beautifully clean air that needs to be preserved, the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve and the important scientific work going on there, and the lovely dust-free afternoon breezes may all be a thing of the past if the quarry is approved. I know proponents for the project and the EIR say the dust will be mitigated, but my common sense says it will not be.

For 40 years I have felt the breezes that are pushed from the Pacific Ocean through the Santa Margarita Gap, past Temecula and Wine Country, on its way to the desert. These breezes are the key reason we have clean air and growing conditions that are ideal for vineyards. The location of the quarry is in the middle of the Santa Margarita Gap and could jeopardize what is so important to me and the community.

In studying the matter, I believe there is sufficient aggregate in the region to meet our needs, and if, as Granite says, the majority of its products will go south to San Diego County, then the quarry should go there. I realize the political environment makes it difficult to get a new quarry approved in San Diego County. It should be no different in Riverside County, especially considering that the impacts dramatically outweigh the benefits.

It is imperative to the future welfare of our region that the Riverside County Board of Supervisors denies Liberty Quarry's application.

MENIFEE: City gets Safe Route to School grant

Money earmarked for project near Romoland Elementary

Students at Romoland Elementary School in Menifee should soon have a safer route to school thanks to a grant from the California Department of Transportation.

The Menifee City Council last month authorized the design as well as sidewalk construction, and the installation of curbs and gutters on Antelope Road north of the school and east on Watson Road to Trade Winds Drive.

Called Safe Routes to School, the state program has granted $411,000 to the city for road improvements. Under terms of the grant, the city is required to kick in an additional $46,000 to help pay for the project.

Romoland Elementary Principal Troy Cox was happy about the news.
"I travel that route to school every day and it could use some work," Cox said. "Sidewalks anywhere around our school make a big difference and are a welcome addition."

Menifee City Engineer Don Allison said work could begin on the Romoland Elementary project in early 2011. He said rights-of-way will have to be obtained from three property owners along the proposed construction route, which measures about a mile.

"The only surface there now is dirt, so when it rains those kids are buried in mud," Allison said.

Menifee Councilman Scott Mann, who helped write the Safe Routes to School grant proposal, said the award from Caltrans marks a milestone in the city's two-year history: It's the first grant awarded to the city.

In all, 48 grants were awarded to cities across the state.
"It's really good to win one," Mann said. "It's nice to have because we need the infrastructure."

The councilman said grant proposals were written separately for two projects ---- one being Romoland Elementary and the other for a combination of Menifee Middle School and nearby Menifee Elementary School in the southwest part of the city. The city was seeking about $800,000 for that project.

Menifee Middle and Menifee Elementary often have drainage problems when it rains, Mann said. He added that proposal will be submitted again to Caltrans.

Menifee is the only Southwest County city to have been awarded a Safe Routes to School grant in the current cycle of the program. Wildomar received a similar grant for $403,000 in 2008-09.

Pennypickle's Workshop, the Temecula Children's Museum, is going to be a drop-off point for people donating Halloween costumes to "The Cancer Kids", who are sponsored by a non-profit organization called Discovery Arts, founded by entertainment industry professionals who try to use the healing power of the arts to comfort children who have cancer and life threatening illnesses.

These costumes are given to each child who enters one of six hospitals in the Southern California area to receive treatment. They don't wear them only on Halloween. The children become very attached to their costumes and they are a great source of fantasy for them when their lives are disrupted by the unthinkable.

Here is a quote from Discovery Arts: "If any of you happen to be out 'Costume Shopping' for Halloween... keep us in mind. We give our children a brand new costume each and every time they are in the hospital. They LOVE them... they sleep in them, they do shows in them and we even had one of our patients arrive in an ambulance at the hospital dressed in her Cinderella costume!! The girls love to be pretty princesses and the boys love to be strong superheroes... Spread the word if you can. Thank you!!!"

Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, released the following statement to set the record straight:

"Jerry Brown is a career politician who has repeatedly supported tax increases. As Governor, he vehemently opposed Prop. 13 before he supported it, and he supported an increase in the gas tax. As Mayor of Oakland he supported a property tax increase five times and he increased taxes on everything from picnic tables to cable TV. Just last year, he supported the largest income tax increase in the state's history. Hardworking, taxpaying Californians cannot afford a third term of Jerry Brown."

On the campaign trail, Brown tells Californians he will only raise taxes if voters approve them; but his record tells a different story.

As Governor, Brown vigorously opposed Proposition 13, calling it "a consumer fraud" and "a rip-off." He signed a bill increasing the state gas tax, proposed a $5 billion sales tax increase and worked to get rid of the two-thirds requirement to raise business taxes. And just last year - during a recession - Brown supported Proposition 1A, which would have been the largest tax increase in California's history.

I have known Jerrad since we were in the 5th grade in Upland California. Now a few years later I am thrilled to be the host for this event that will help raise money to pay medical bills for this advanced treatment the City of Hope used to save Jerrad's life. The commission is consistently holding hearings on the role of financial institutions and federal regulators relating to the financial crisis.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis, otherwise known as silicosis, is a very real and dangerous disease, which is the collection of highly microscopic particles of silicone dust in the lungs. It causes a hardening of the lungs, which means breathing difficulties, like asthma, COPD, etc. ...

I learned most of this many years ago as a child living a good few "safe" miles from the same type of quarry as is proposed here. Because of growing up in these types of conditions, I am personally offended when told "it is only dust," or "go to a car wash."

You see, I know better. I live with this disease every day, and it's why I moved out here: for clean healthy air for my family and my grandchildren. We all deserve to live a clean and healthy life. Don't all of you deserve the same? Now I hope more understand why I am offended by all these people speaking without any knowledgeable sense.

A major storm came through Temecula wine country today, August 25, causing significant damage on our beautiful hilltop stage.

Because we have to rebuild the stage and repair lighting equipment, we are postponing the opening of our show until next weekend and we will only run for two weekends instead of three... the "curse" of Macbeth, for sure.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused in your planning.

New show dates are Sept. 3, 4, 5 and 10, 11.

Great close up video of a Dust Devil in Menifee California

Here is a fun video to watch, I got this today right by Heritage Lake in Menifee. I parked at the end Junipero Road near Boulder Ridge Middle School and was able to get up close, to the point I was about 20 feet from this rather powerful dust devil. I hope you enjoy!!

I have received a ton of response from the new site, thank you for all the positive thoughts and input.

I had a great ribbon cutting event this morning with my wife Jeney and Daughter Apryl at the Full Value Property Management offices in Murrieta. Jeney and Apryl helped set up all the snacks, thanks girls! Many thanks to my soon to be sister-in-law / office manager Teresa for getting the office together so the folk from the chamber had a clean organized office to see.

Applebee's Spinach Pizza Appetizer

Pita Bread (2 or 3 whole)
1 − 10 oz. pkg frozen spinach
1/3 c. nutritional yeast
1 med. onion
5 or 6 plum tomatoes
8 oz. pkg fresh mushrooms
3−4 cloves garlic
1 tsp of each of the following spices:
Basil, Parsley, Cayenne pepper
1/2 to 1 c. rice milk
4 Tbsp flour

Thaw spinach completely, press out all water. Preheat oven to 425.

Heat milk in saucepan. When hot but not boiling, stir in flour. Stir until sauce begins to thicken, turn heat down. Add nutritional yeast and spinach. Stir constantly until thick and gooey, only about 3−4 min.

In a separate pan, sauté onion and garlic until onion is tender. Stir in tomatoes, mushrooms, and spices. Sauté until just done.

Using a very sharp bread knife, split each pita bread so that you have two round flat pieces instead of one thick one. Place each piece of bread on a cookie sheet or pizza pan. Spread spinach sauce over each. Top with tomato mixture, being careful to avoid the juice.

Bake for 5 to 7 minutes. Watch closely so that the edges of the pita don't burn. Slice as desired.

T.G.I. Friday's Sizzling Vegetable Fajitas

Pesto:
8 oz. chopped cilantro
3 cloves garlic
1/2 c olive oil
salt and pepper, to taste
2 oz. freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1 medium onion, sliced
1/2 tbsp. margarine
Carrots, zucchini and yellow summer squash, cut julienne−style
Broccoli and cauliflower, cut into small florets
Green pepper and mushrooms, thinly sliced
Snow peas, whole
Juice of 1/2 lemon
3 flour tortillas, warmed
Lime wedge, for garnish

To make pesto, put cilantro and garlic in a food processor and process until finely chopped. With machine on, gradually add olive oil. Season and blend in cheese.

Slice enough onion to equal about 1/2 cup. Sauté with margarine in a small cast−iron skillet over medium−high heat. Cook past translucent stage until browned, about six to eight minutes.

Prepare about 2 cups of vegetables (the combination depends on personal taste). Cook all vegetables except mushrooms in lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of pesto over medium to medium−high heat. When almost at al−dente stage, add sliced mushrooms. Continue cooking for about one minute. (The remaining pesto can be refrigerated for future use.)

Place vegetable mixture over sizzling onions, then spoon vegetable−onion mixture into center of warmed tortillas. Top with condiments (guacamole, sour cream, shredded Cheddar cheese, salsa) to taste, then roll up tortillas.

Olive Garden Capellini Pomodoro

3 cloves Garlic, minced
2 lbs Plum tomatoes; seeded, diced
1 oz Fresh basil leaves, minced
1/3 c extra virgin olive oil
3 oz Parmesan cheese
12 oz Dry angel hair pasta, cooked
1/4 tsp Pepper

Heat olive oil and add garlic; cook until it turns white.

Add tomatoes and pepper and heat through, stirring constantly, about 2 to 3 minutes. Tomatoes should not lose their shape. Remove from heat.

Transfer hot, cooked pasta to large bowl. Toss pasta gently with tomato mixture, basil and half of Parmesan cheese.

Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan, serve immediately.

El Torito's Black Bean Soup

12 oz. dried black beans
8 c vegetable stock
2 tsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 c carrots, chopped
1 c celery, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
3 Tbsp fresh lime juice
Fresh cilantro (optional)

Rinse and sort though black beans, discarding any that are shriveled or discolored. Place beans in a large stockpot. Cover beans with water and refrigerate to soak overnight.

Drain beans and return to stockpot. Add stock and heat to boiling.

Meanwhile, heat olive oil over medium−high heat in a large skillet. Add onion, carrot, celery and garlic and saute until tender, approximately 5 minutes. Add to stockpot along with oregano, thyme, bay leaf and cayenne pepper. Cover stockpot and reduce heat to simmer for 3 to 4 hours.

Transfer soup to blender or food processor and puree to desired thickness. Just before serving add lime juice and garnish with a sprig of fresh cilantro, if desired. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve.

Cheesecake Factory Bruschetta

1−1/2 cups chopped Roma tomatoes
2 Tbsp.diced red onion
1 large clove garlic, minced
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh basil
2 tbsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. red wine vinegar
1/4 tsp. salt
dash of ground black pepper
1/2 loaf french baguette or crusty Italian bread, sliced into 5−7 slices
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
2−3 sprigs Italian parsley

In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, garlic and basil. Add 1/2 Tbsp.
of oil, vinegar, salt and pepper and mix well. Cover bowl and refrigerate
for at least an hour.

Preheat broiler, slice the bread in 1" slices
diagonally to make 5−7 slices. Combine remaining 1 1/2 Tbsp. oil with the
garlic salt. Brush entire surface of each slice (both sides) with the olive
oil mixture. Broil slices for 1 1/2−2 mins. on each side, until surface
starts to brown.

Arrange bread like spokes of a wheel on plate. Put the
chilled tomato mixture in a pile in the middle of the slices. Garnish with
Italian parsley.

Veggie / Vegan Stir Fried Rice

2 C cooked rice (cooked with ¼ C soy sauce)
2 eggs worth of egg veggie replacer
2 Tbsp green peas
1/2 C smoked tofu, diced small
1 Tbsp green onions, chopped
1 tsp salt
4 Tbsp cooking oil

1. Heat wok and add 4 Tbsp oil. Pour fake eggs in and stir fry until well scrambled.

2. Put rice in, lower the temperature and stir until well cooked. Add tofu, green peas, green onion and salt to the rice. Stir until all ingredients are well mixed before placing the rice on a platter and serving.

California Pizza Kitchen Broccoli and Sun−Dried Tomato Fusilli

1 pound dry fusilli pasta
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup chopped fresh garlic
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
About 12 oil−packed sun−dried tomatoes, drained and thinly sliced
1 quart blanched broccoli florets, drained (bite−size pieces)
1 1/4 cups grated Parmesan cheese (reserve 1/4 cup for garnish)

Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Cook pasta until
al dente, 8 to 10 minutes.

Heat olive oil in a large non−stick frying pan over high heat.
Add salt and garlic; when the garlic just begins to brown, add
thyme and sun−dried tomatoes. Toss and add broccoli. When broccoli
is heated through, add drained pasta (if pan is not large enough,
combine in a large mixing bowl while ingredients are hot).

Add 1 cup Parmesan cheese to all, sprinkling and stirring to mix.
Serve in warm bowls with a fresh dusting of Parmesan cheese.

Mercury found in high fructose corn syrup

MONDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) — Almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies.

HFCS has replaced sugar as the sweetener in many beverages and foods such as breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS, but teens and other high consumers can take in 80 percent more HFCS than average.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, said in a prepared statement.

In the first study, published in current issue of Environmental Health, researchers found detectable levels of mercury in nine of 20 samples of commercial HFCS.

And in the second study, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), a non-profit watchdog group, found that nearly one in three of 55 brand-name foods contained mercury. The chemical was found most commonly in HFCS-containing dairy products, dressings and condiments.

But an organization representing the refiners is disputing the results published in Environmental Health.

“This study appears to be based on outdated information of dubious significance,” said Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, in a statement. “Our industry has used mercury-free versions of the two re-agents mentioned in the study, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda, for several years. These mercury-free re-agents perform important functions, including adjusting pH balances.”

However, the IATP told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that four plants in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and West Virginia still use “mercury-cell” technology that can lead to contamination.

IATP’s Ben Lilliston also told HealthDay that the Environmental Health findings were based on information gathered by the FDA in 2005.

And the group’s own study, while not peer-reviewed, was based on products “bought off the shelf in the autumn of 2008,” Lilliston added.

The use of mercury-contaminated caustic soda in the production of HFCS is common. The contamination occurs when mercury cells are used to produce caustic soda.

“The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury. The good news is that mercury-free HFCS ingredients exist. Food companies just need a good push to only use those ingredients,” Wallinga said in his prepared statement.

Clear and warming here in Menifee California, and a cool cloud video from Summer 2008

After many cold nights here in Menifee, where temps were below 30 4 nights in a row, it got almost hot today. I suspect this little warming trend will be short lived since we are still in the beginning of January. Here is my random pic of the day, it is actually a video. I took it this summer while fueling up in Murrieta California. This cloud came out of nowhere and started building up over the Wildomar area. It is somewhat unusual for a big cloud to grow so fast in that area, often they are further to the east in Hemet, Idyllwild and Anza. Hope you enjoy.

LaVerkin Overlook, just west of Zion Park

This is a short 360 degree video of the LaVerkin Overlook, east of LaVerkin Utah and west of the main gate of Zion National Park. I filmed this on November 23 2008. What an amazing place to see the sunset behind the mountains and deserts west of Hurricane and St George Utah!

To get to this location:

After you drive thru Hurricane and up the hill from LaVerkin on your way to Zion, this is the first right you can make off of the highway. The road is dirt/gravel and about 1 mile long, but the view is amazing and worth the trip. In clear weather you can drive any passenger car to this outlook, but in the rain/snow I would recommend a truck with 4x4.

So, if your a vegetarian like me, you might also find it difficult to get good veggie friendly food on the road. I have a few suggestions and ill be posting them here. I will also have quick reviews of great places to stop in for a vegan or vegetarian bite.

Zion National Park is beautiful, pictures of a great hike on emerald pool trail

I took these pictures when I was hiking in late November 2008.

Here are some from the Emerald Pools trail, lower and middle pool. The waterfall was not flowing strong at the top pool, so we just went up to the middle one.

It was great to see as much water flowing at the end of the dry season before the winter rain and snow.

Ill be posting more soon from other locations and from other years. Keep checking back often and feel free to comment on your adventures on the emerald pools trail at Zion national park in Utah.
